Trevisan prize for Students “AI for Good” - Winners
We are delighted to announce the recipients of the inaugural Trevisan Prize for Students “AI for Good” 2025. The prizes will be awarded during the Trevisan Prize ceremony on Monday 26th of January 2.00pm - 6.00 pm (local time). Attendance is free but registration is required: form to participate.
The awardees are:
Satchit Sivakumar, PhD student at Boston University, for his work titled “Stability is Stable: Connections between Replicability, Privacy, and Adaptive Generalization.” This work establishes new rigorous connections and separations between replicability, privacy, and other related notions of algorithmic stability that are central to the development of fair and accurate artificial intelligence models.
Francielle Vargas, from the University of São Paulo, for her dissertation titled “Socially Responsible and Explainable Automated Fact-Checking and Hate Speech Detection.” This work introduces new methods to promote fairness, accountability, and explainability in natural language processing systems, particularly for automated fact-checking and hate speech detection in underrepresented languages.
The Trevisan Prize for Students “AI for Good” aims to celebrate Luca Trevisan (1971–2024) and honor his legacy by recognizing research that reflects Luca’s passion for rigorous computer science and social inclusion. The prize was instituted in 2025 jointly by the Computer Science Department of Bocconi University, EDGE APS LGBTI+ Leaders for Change, and Luca’s husband, Junce Zhang. The prize is awarded biennially to Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD students who have demonstrated exceptional contributions to AI-related research with the potential for significant, positive, and long-lasting impact on society.
The inaugural prize was announced in the summer, and nominations were received by October 31, 2025. A committee comprising Cynthia Dwork (Harvard University, chair), Tommaso D’Orsi (Bocconi University), Emmanuela Orsini (Bocconi University), Mario Di Carlo (EDGE), and Junce Zhang (family representative) selected the awardees from a set of excellent nominations.
