Call for Nominations: Trevisan Prize 2025
Nominations are open for the 2025 Trevisan Prize. The deadline for notification of nomination intent is July 31, 2025, and the nomination deadline is August 31, 2025.
About the Prize
The Trevisan Prize for outstanding work in the Theory of Computing is sponsored by the Department of Computing Sciences at Bocconi University and the Italian Academy of Sciences.
The prize is named in honor of Luca Trevisan in recognition of his major contributions to the Theory of Computing. It aims to recognize outstanding work in the field, and to broaden the reach of awards both in terms of research areas and recognition of individuals.
The prize is biennial (given once every two years) and consists of two prizes, given to:
- A mid-career scientist whose work has had a significant and lasting impact (15K EUR)
- An early-career scientist whose work has demonstrated exceptional promise (10K EUR)
In addition to the one-time monetary prize, the Italian Academy of Sciences will contribute a commemorative statue, presented to the winners as a symbol of their excellence.
The prize ceremony will take place at Bocconi University, where the winners will be asked to give public lectures (three in total):
- Mid-career awardee: one scientific lecture and one lecture aimed at a general audience
- Early-career awardee: one scientific lecture
The 1st Trevisan Prize ceremony and lectures will take place at Bocconi University on January 26, 2026, the day before the beginning of the 16th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science conference that will take place in Bocconi University, January 27-30, 2026.
Prize Committee
The 2025 Prize Committee consists of Johan Håstad (KTH), Pravesh Kothari (Princeton), Laura Sanità (Bocconi) , Madhu Sudan (chair, Harvard).
Eligibility, 2025
Any researcher in the Theory of Computing is deemed eligible.
Nominated scientists will be considered early-career if, on January 1, 2025, they are at most 35 years old or have finished their PhD on or after January 1, 2019. The eligibility is extended due to leaves of absence according to the same rules as the ERC starting grant: https://erc.europa.eu/apply-grant/starting-grant.
There is no age restriction on the age of mid-career scientists.
Nominations are encouraged from the broad spectrum of the Theory of Computing. The Committee has the ultimate authority to decide whether a person is eligible for the Prize.
Self-nominations are not allowed.
Nominations, 2025
Nominations for the prize should be submitted by email to the Prize Committee Chair at trevisan.prize.2025@gmail.com. Please make sure that the Subject line of all related messages begins with “Trevisan Prize 2025”. To be considered, the committee chair must be informed of intent to nominate by July 31, 2025, and the nominations must be received by August 31, 2025.
A nomination package should include:
- Nominee's CV (if available).
- A letter justifying the nomination with reference to the career stage of the nominee.
- A support letter or letters signed by at least two scientists not including the nominator.
Additional support letters may also be received. The nominator should collect all material and combine into single pdf and email to the committee chair at the address above.
Nominators for the early-career award: please include a sentence confirming that you have verified that the candidate is eligible.
Selection Process, 2025
The Prize Committee is free to use any other source of information they deem suitable. All matters relating to the selection process left unspecified in this announcement are left to the discretion of the Prize Committee.
